The beloved late Ruth Wanjira Gacharamu was born in Karindundu Village in 1875. She was born to a father called Gatutu wa Njeru and mother called Wanini.

When she was a young child she was kidnapped by a legion of Maasai Morans but before she was taken to Maasai land she was rescued by a guard of the district commissioner who was of the Nyamwezi Tribe of Tanganyika by the name of Kumba Kumba, who adopted her as his child. When she came of age, she got married to an Indian by the name of Gacaramu, who had a maize mill in Chania, Nyeri, in 1906. Between the period of time of her abduction and marriage, her parents didn’t know where she lived. During that time, they received a report about her at their home and her parents were very happy to see her for a second time.

The beloved late and her husband were blessed with boys and girls, who were: The first one; the late Daudi Muthuri, The second one; the late Beth Wakura ya Macheru, Edward Mung’ure, Kagure Karumwa, the late Njeru Gacaramu and the late Babu Gacaramu.

The beloved late, her husband and their children moved to Mihuti Village, Mukurwe-ini in 1921. This is where her husband worked in the Public Works Department (PWD).

The beloved late joined the P.C.E.A church and was baptized in 1926 in Mihuti Church.

The beloved late and her children went back to where she was born in Karindundu village after the death of her husband. She continued to follow the church as a staunch christian from her baptism up to her death.

She was a member of P.C.E.A Karindundu and she was one of the oldest members of the Women’s Guild.

The beloved late did not have the strength to take herself to church but she used to be visited by the Karindundu church women’s guild members, who made her be and live with a very strong spirit.

The beloved late got sick and was taken to Karatina Hospital on 24-9-1990. She passed away on 11-10-1990 after being in the hospital for three weeks. She passed away with 115 years.

The beloved late was called ‘mother’ by her six (6) children, called grandmother by forty five children (45), called great grandmother by one hundred and four children (104) and called great great grandmother by eighteen (18) children. Meaning her descendants were one hundred and seventy three (173).

THE LIFE STORY OF RUTH MUTHONI GACHARAMU

She started going to church in 1920 at Mihuti Parish. Baptized in 12-9-1926 by the right Rev. Simon Karechu in the same church P.C.E.A Mihuti. She remained a follower of the church up to 1931, when she left P.C.E.A Mihuti and came to P.C.E.A Kiamwangi Parish. In 1943, all those that came from Karindundu were give a place for prayer in Karindundu and it was called P.C.E.A Karindundu Church and they were all given permission to be having their prayers there.

Over time, the church members in Karindundu were moved from being under P.C.E.A Kiamwangi Parish and were taken to be under P.C.E.A Mathaithi. During this whole time, Ruth was one of them and neither did she lose her faith nor involved herself in things contrary to Christianity.

During the time of her sickness, the right reverend, the church elders and Woman’s Guild of P.C.E.A Karindundu have been with her and visited her regularly at her home in Mukore, even at the hospital up to the time the lord called her to leave this world. She was called by the lord as a member of the Karatina Parish, Kirimara Presbytery.

Woman’s Guild

In this fellowship of ladies and girls of P.C.E.A, Ruth Muthoni was the first to become part of the Council of the Light (Kiama Kia Ngo, where if one becomes a member, they append their signature and fingerprint, and say that they reject rituals of non-believers. She became a member of this council in 1922 and she never deviated from it.
